Teachers - Elementary - Kindergarten
Aba Wathech! My name is Sheri Surkon. I am a Kindergarten teacher here at Nakoda Elementary School. I am very excited to be part of such a dedicated and amazing team of Administrators, Teachers, Teacher Assistants and Support Staff! I look forward to supporting and challenging another year of rigorous growth and learning in our fun and energetic Kindergarten class.
I am originally from B.C. but I grew up in Calgary. I lost my father in a car wreck when I was just a young girl. Losing him was very traumatic for me. My mother remarried a Metis man and he adopted myself and my two sisters. Growing up with a Metis Stepfather brought me firsthand experience of the harsh realities of being First Nation, Metis, Inuit; (F.N.M.I.). However, it also afforded me an intimate understanding of the sacred beauty of the same.
Later on, I earned two post secondary degrees: a Bachelor of Fine Art degree and then a degree in Education.
My Stepfathers’ influence in my life, fueled my desire to support children and to bring awareness to F.N.M.I. rights and freedoms; and much of my work reflects that. As an educator and an artist, I am excited about where this passion will guide me.
My goal in Kindergarten is to meet the needs of each student and to guide them in achieving excellent creative academic learning, (while having some serious fun!) I am very honored to be here - in this place at this time, and I look forward to when our paths will cross! Ms. Sheri
